"Midlife Woman... Wise Woman," is downloadable as a free PDF. It explores the idea of menopause as a Sacred Rite of Passage, through which we can step into our full power and wisdom in midlife and beyond.

Grandmother whales, mother trees, and ancient cultures all have much to teach us about the wisdom, perspective, compassion, and other unseen powers of older women. Menopause, if we engage with it consciously, is the portal through which we can access and develop these capacities.

Conscious menopause offers an opportunity for deep healing, and for many of us it will be the first time we're able to engage the Life Force so profoundly in service of our own growth.

Choosing to do so is a powerful vote for a more peaceful world, in which the the critical roles of older women as way-finders, care-takers, and peace-makers are elevated and honored.

If you're reading this, chances are you grew up in the same culture I did -- one that measures children's worth in terms of "good behavior" that reflects well on parents and teachers.

Adults' worth is weighed up in tangible performance, money, status, youth, and power over others (as opposed to power with others).

Such a culture impoverishes all of us, at every life stage, and makes it much harder than it should be for us to grow into our power as fully functioning, whole adults.

It’s critical that we recognize this and seek to keep growing in spite of it, because our world is in desperate need of powerful, fully functioning adults.

We need such adults--Elders and Elders-in-training--to guide and mentor the young (obviously).

We also (possibly not so obviously) need the touch of Elders' hands upon the web of life -- repairing it, renewing it, participating in it, enriching it, so that the children and grandchildren can thrive.

(There is also an older version of this essay still on the website (which was called "Expanding on the Grandmother Effect"). This has not been updated, but is still a good read.
