Natural Oral Care & DIY Toothpaste
Modern dentistry treats problems rather than preventing them.
And toothpastes, even most "natural" ones, are just plain BAD for oral health.
So what can you do about it?
Or read on to find out more...
Have you experienced anything like this?
- By the end of my teen years, I'd lost count of the amalgam fillings in my teeth.
- In my early thirties, I had my first root canal surgery.
- Within a few years after my kids were born, I lost 4 teeth and had 2 implants.
- Within the next few years, ANOTHER tooth broke and had to be extracted (this time I refused to replace it with another implant), AND
- one of the earlier implants had to be removed because my gum was receding around it and my jaw bone was at risk of disintegrating.
Until recently, I hated sitting in the dentist's chair
I felt completely powerless, afraid of the discomfort of scraping and drilling, and had no clue how to take care of my own oral health without consulting a dentist.
I also felt betrayed and even deceived.
I met dentist after dentist, working my way up from regular dentists to so-called "holistic" dentists, and over and over again I felt let down and disappointed as treatments that they promised me would work, did not.
And then there's the COST! In the earlier years of all these treatments, my husband and I could afford to pay for them. But now, with kids, a mortgage, and only one income, expensive dental treatments are WAY beyond our means.
NONE of those dentists taught me any of what I'm about to share with you in this Workshop.
Now, I feel CONFIDENT about my oral health
I'm in charge now, not the dentist. I feel confident, empowered, and knowledgeable about how to take care of my own teeth — or better yet: how to support my teeth in taking care of themselves.
I feel confident, with what I now know, that my children will never need painful, expensive, and damaging dental treatments that only become necessary after dental health has already started to deteriorate.
In this Workshop, I'll teach you everything I've learned that's given me this confidence.

Here's what DIY Toothpaste will cover:
A Short Introduction to Oral Health - defining what oral health is and the three simple components of caring for your teeth and gums.
Toxic Toothpaste Ingredients - toothpaste as we know it is a cosmetic product, not a healthcare or cleanliness product. Everything we’ve been taught to expect toothpastes to do is achieved using toxic ingredients that have nothing to do with oral health.
Safe, Non-toxic Ingredients For Cleaning Your Teeth - learn about the ingredients we're going to use for our homemade toothpaste replacements. I’ll describe exactly what they do and how they support oral health.
Recipes - the alternatives to toothpaste that my family and I use, from super-simple brushing with just one or a few ingredients, to more appealing mixes for those who are transitioning away from conventional toothpastes. I'll also share optional additional ingredients, along with links to other recipes and useful websites.
A complete listing of Resources - all the resources provided in this Workshop, in one download for easy reference.
What will the Bathroom Basics Workshop Series cover?
Initially, the Workshop topics may include (but may not be limited to):
This Workshop, DIY Toothpaste - how to replace commercial toothpastes with a few simple, non-toxic ingredients that are far more effective at keeping your teeth and gums healthy than the expensive gick in the tubes
DIY Shampoo and Hair Conditioner - how to save a small fortune in hair care products, wash your hair less often, produce less waste, and have cleaner, healthier hair
Basic Herbal First Aide - how to use the weeds in your backyard to reduce your reliance on the pharmaceutical section of the bathroom aisle (keep in mind I am not a herbalist; this is just what has worked for my family)
Basic Soap - how to make very simple soaps so you can avoid the fragrances and other unnecessary additives in off-the-shelf soaps
You can read more about the Bathroom Basics Workshop Series, here.
Hi, I'm Kate
I started making my own basic bathroom products over 13 years ago when my first child was a baby.
When I learned what was in the supermarket versions of the products in my bathroom, and how simple and economical it was to make my own alternatives, making my own became something I simply couldn't afford not to do.
Now, as a full-time homeschooling parent, homemaker, gardener, farmer, and writer, making the basic bathroom necessities I'll show you is still a regular part of my routine.

You've obviously done your research and you are clearly passionate about sharing your knowledge to help people make informed decisions.

Thank you Kate for your thorough and thoughtful outline of oral care.
Building up your confidence to become less dependent upon large companies (who don't have your best interests at heart) is a daunting task in this modern world. The importance of taking back as much control over what you consume and put into your body is as important as ever. Thank you again for contributing to my journey of being a conscious consumer.

Resources
This Workshop inspired me, built my confidence, and outdid my expectation. The outcomes were very specific, and went far beyond just toothpaste.
The inspiration to make this change is huge. While this is 'one small step,' I'm left feeling that in an empowering way this is also a big step.

Is this Workshop right for you?
You're most likely to enjoy and benefit from this online workshop if you identify with these descriptions...
- You're looking for simple, affordable, practical, and health-promoting. You're not looking for luxurious, expensive, boutique ingredients and you don't want to learn how to make self-care products that match modern expectations of appearance, texture etc (because you know those are impossible to achieve without synthetic ingredients).
- You care about the impacts of your choices beyond your own bathroom and your own health. You're interested in any opportunity to reduce your reliance on "business as usual," to help make a difference or at least to reduce your impact.
- You're looking for support and empowerment to be more in charge of your own basic healthcare. You appreciate high tech medicine when it's called for, but you gag on the idea of needing a white-coated expert for every basic health care decision.
What does it cost?

It’s very encouraging that one of your objectives for this whole workshop is to help the participant take this beyond themselves, to their family or household.

There was a huge amount of relevant and well researched information, with a logical and easy flow.
The mix of video presentation, text, and action steps was very helpful. The links to even more downloadable information gave me the option of how deeply I want to go into each subject.
I had no idea that safe, effective and "pleasant experience" toothpaste was so easy to make with inexpensive and readily available household ingredients.
This course has left me feeling enthusiastic for this easy yet valuable health change.

I’ve known for a long time that commercial toothpaste is full of nasties and for years have been buying expensive ‘natural' toothpaste. But I wanted to make my own, to save money.
There's no turning back for me now! I will never buy pre-made toothpaste again, knowing how easy and inexpensive it is to make my own.

I'd recommend this workshop to parents of children aged from babies through to teens.

No. So long as you have an internet connection you can access this Workshop from anywhere, at any time of the day or night.
You have lifetime access, which means that so long as ARealGreenLife is online you'll be able to access this Workshop or its updated equivalent. (I'm planning on ARealGreenLife being around for a very long time.)
Yes! Each Page and Lesson has a comments section at the bottom where you can leave any comment you like. This is the best place to ask questions; I check them daily and respond immediately.
This will depend on your watching and reading speed, how many extra resources you choose to read, and whether you go back to repeat anything.
There's a brief Introduction, 4 Lessons, and a brief Conclusion.
At a guess, it may take you around 4 hours to go through the all of the lessons. But that would not include time taken to read extra resources and prepare for making the toothpaste/powder recipes.
Here's an estimated breakdown of the time commitment for the different kinds of content:
- Video - most of the Lessons have a video between 5 and 12 minutes long
- Text - each Lesson has text that will take the average reader from 8 to 20 minutes to read through once
- Downloads/extra reading
- Lesson 1 has two downloads (which you can print and take with you to read somewhere else) which add about 20 minutes of required reading.
- Lesson 2 is optional (you'll be guided as to whether to you need to do it or not) and also has optional extra reading that you can print out and read elsewhere.
- Lesson 3 has several very short optional extra resources to read now or refer back to later from the final Workshop Download. - The Quizzes - Lessons 1, 2, and 3 each have a short quiz to help you choose what to do next. The quizzes are multiple choice, so they're quick, and they also request a few words of feedback on the lesson you've just done.
- The tooth-cleaning mixture recipes - making the recipe that we use in our household takes me less than five minutes from start to finish; talking you through all of the recipes on the video obviously takes longer but still well under 15 minutes.
- Conclusion - the final session has a short video, short survey, then a final Workshop Download to take with you.
- The Workshop Download and extra resources - the download includes a guide to getting your family on board which is about a 6 minute read.
It also lists all of the recipes and everything you might want to refer back to, including extensive extra resources, particularly on nutrition as it relates to dental health. Everything has links for quick and easy access. There are potentially hours and hours of extra reading here, but all of this is optional and you can dip in and out of it according to your schedule and level of interest.
As I described in the Guarantee, above, if you're not happy with the workshop and you let me know why within the first 30 days, I'll send you a full refund.
Simple and inexpensive. Empowering.
I wanted to do three things with this workshop: keep it simple, keep it inexpensive, and make it empowering.
About the simple and inexpensive part
The last thing you need in your life is more complexity or more expenses. Right?
This is not about replacing bathroom aisle dependence with time-consuming processes or expensive, boutique ingredients. You can find information and online courses all over the internet with more complicated toothpaste recipes, using more luxurious ingredients.
I have nothing against luxurious self-care. (You totally deserve it!) However, I also recognize how overwhelming it might feel to think about adding One. More. Thing, to what's already on your to-do list.
That's why these recipes are SIMPLE. Once you get the hang of it, it will take you less than 5 minutes to put together your family's tooth-cleaning mixture, from start to finish.
These recipes are also INEXPENSIVE. You will save a small fortune on supermarket toothpastes over time. If you've been buying pre-made "natural" toothpastes, you'll save a larger fortune over time.
Not to mention the VERY large fortune you and/or your children might save on dentist bills once you know how to put holistic prevention ahead of expensive treatments.
And about the empowering part...
In most people's story of the world, supermarkets provide everything we need. And lucky for us because we don't know how to make or grow what we need for ourselves. We rely on mass-produced personal care products, white-coated experts, and high-tech medicine for our health and well-being.
That story makes it impossible for us to comprehend how our ancestors cared for each other before there were experts and high-tech medicine. We just assume they were dumb brutes who lived short and nasty lives.
But it turns out that besides being incredibly dis-empowering, that story is also just untrue.
Archeological evidence shows that 40,000 to 60,000 years ago, our pre-human ancestors already had sophisticated knowledge of herbal medicines, wound care and bone-setting techniques, and were flossing between their teeth (probably with grass stems; not with nylon floss made from crude oil).
The idea that we need high-tech help for basic preventative healthcare is ridiculous. I'm on a mission to change it, beginning with toothpaste.
